The head of the Catholic Church in Brooklyn offered a $5,000 bribe to an Albany politician in exchange for dropping her support for the reform of a state law preventing victims of child sexual abuse from seeking justice, the pol claimed Monday.

Assemblywoman Margaret Markey, who has for a decade advocated for an overhaul of the state’s statute of limitations on claims of child sexual abuse, said she turned down the unholy hush money from Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio in 2007.

“I’m not a billionaire, but I don’t need $5,000 to buy me off,” Markey told the Daily News.

The offer came across as a payoff, not a campaign donation, she added.

“The bishop did not, would not and has never attempted to bribe an elected official or anyone else,” said Carolyn Erstad, a diocese spokeswoman. “This is a very serious allegation against a clergyman with an impeccable reputation. It is beyond comprehension that an elected official would not report an alleged crime of this kind to the proper authorities. She did not report it. It is not true. And it would be irresponsible for your paper to print it.”

Markey (D-Queens) said DiMarzio, who as head of the Brooklyn Diocese presides over 1.5 million Catholics, invited her into his chancery at the now-shuttered Bishop Ford High School on Prospect Park West in early 2007.

A nun was present when he offered the money, she recalled.

Markey’s spokesman Michael Armstrong said that DiMarzio suggested to Markey that the money would go toward therapy for one of her family members who had been sexually abused as a child.

Lawsuits: Sisters abused by same Altoona priest as kids

ALTOONA — Two sisters have sued a Catholic priest, his central Pennsylvania diocese and two ex-bishops who supervised him, saying the cleric molested them repeatedly as girls — including one at her first Communion party.

The younger sister, who is now 47, said she met the Rev. Charles Bodziak at St. Leo Church in Altoona, where he was the parish priest, when she was in second grade. At the party her parents threw after her first Communion, Bodziak groped her buttocks and gave her an open mouth kiss, according to the lawsuit.

Bodziak, now 74, repeatedly molested the girl until she was in sixth grade, taking her on school trips where she was fondled, kissed and assured “that what he was doing was ‘OK’ because he was a priest,” her lawsuit said.

The lawsuit filed by her older sister, now 49, makes similar allegations against Bodziak, covering the time when she was 8 to 14 years old. She said Bodziak gave her wine on several occasions before molesting her. Bodziak assaulted her in the rectory after summoning her from school and molested her while she practiced the organ in church, according to her lawsuit.

The Associated Press could not locate an attorney for Bodziak, and three phone numbers listed as his in online databases were not answered Tuesday.

Tony DeGol, a spokesman for the Altoona-Johnstown diocese, declined to comment on the allegations, but noted current Bishop Mark Bartchak placed Bodziak “on leave in January as a precautionary measure while the diocese re-examines an allegation of sexual misconduct involving minors against Father Bodziak dating back more than 30 years.”

It unclear whether the allegation cited by the diocese relates to the lawsuits filed Tuesday by attorney Richard Serbin, who has been suing the diocese and its priests for alleged molestation of children for decades.

Bodziak was labeled a child predator in a grand jury report earlier this year. The report focused on the diocese and was critical of two former bishops who were sued on Tuesday, James Hogan and Joseph Adamec. Hogan, who headed the diocese from 1966 to 1986, died in 2005. Adamec, who succeeded him, retired in 2011.

Adamec’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call for comment. DeGol said a priest serving as executor of Hogan’s estate declined comment.

The lawsuits parrot the grand jury’s findings that the bishops were either slow to respond or sought to cover-up allegations of child-sex abuse against Bodziak and dozens of other priests over the last 50 years.

The grand jury report noted that Bodziak remained in ministry after an allegation involving a different girl surfaced in 2003 and Adamec referred it to a review board. The lawsuits quote the grand jury report, which said the board served as a “fact-finding” mechanism that forwarded information to lawyers to help the diocese protect itself from litigation, “not a victim service function.”

“Saint” Peter Damian

I take the words of one of your churches Saints, Peter Damian, which he uttered way back in 1049, in his lengthy treatise, Letter 31, the Book of Gomorrah (Liber Gomorrhianus), containing the most extensive treatment and condemnation by any Church Father of clerical pederasty and homosexual practices. The most dramatic and explicit condemnation of forbidden clergy sexual activity was the Book of Gomorrah of St. Peter Damian, completed in 1051.   The author had been a Benedictine monk and was appointed archbishop and later cardinal by the reigning pope.  Peter Damian was also a dedicated Church reformer who lived in a society wherein clerical decadence was not only widespread and publicly known, but generally accepted as the norm.   His work, the circumstances that prompted it and the reaction of the reigning pope (Leo IX) are a prophetic reflection of the contemporary situation. He begins by singling out superiors who, prompted by excessive and misplaced piety, fail to exclude sodomites (chap. 2).  He asserts that those given to “unclean acts” not be ordained or, if they are already ordained, be dismissed from Holy Orders (chap. 3).  He holds special contempt for those who defile men or boys who come to them for confession (chap. 6).  Likewise he condemns clerics who administer the sacrament of penance (confession) to their victims (chap. 7).  The author also provides a refutation of the canonical sources used by offending clerics to justify their proclivities (chap. 11, 12).  He also provides chapters which assess the damage done to the church by offending clerics (chap. 19, 20, 21).  His final chapter is an appeal to the reigning pope (Leo IX) to take action.

“Listen, you do-nothing superiors of clerics and priests. Listen, and even though you feel sure of yourselves, tremble at the thought that you are partners in the guilt of others; those, I mean, who wink at the sins of their subjects that need correction and who by ill-considered silence allow them license to sin. Listen, I say, and be shrewd enough to understand that all of you alike are deserving of death, that is, not only those who do such things, but also they who approve those who practice them.” (Rom 1:32).

The earliest recorded church legislation is from the council of Elvira (Spain, 306 AD).  Half of the canons passed dealt with sexual behavior of one kind or another and included penalties assessed for clerics who committed adultery or fornication.  Though it did not make specific mention of homosexual activities by the clergy, this early Council reflected the church’s official attitude toward same-sex relationships: men who had sex with young boys were deprived of communion even on their deathbed.

The only time I mentioned 1987, was when I repeated what I read in your blog…(Cipolla stopped molesting Tim Bendig in 1987…after starting in 1982)…which was only 3+ years after I turned him in to the Pittsburgh Police in 1978 for Child Molestation.  He was out of control.  What if it was your child?  What would you have done??   Try to think outside the box sometime Pontillo?Cipolla?

when they hurt the child or the child balks and panics. Pedophile is an adult who is Sexually Attracted to children.  It’s a sickness, a mental problem.   Pedophiles never stop being sexually attracted to children.  They become more cautious because thankfully, the majority of humans on this earth find Pedophelia to be reprehensible.
More than half of the assaults go unreported.
Most of these children don’t want to rehash the assaults due to the guilt and embarrassment
it causes them and the questions and the looks and the innuendos.  A child will stay silent to avoid that shame, even when the child is hurting inside from it.  (That is also why there are usually repercussions later.)  In that case the only person to suffer is the child…until the effects become evident…and then the child and the entire family suffers.  Occasionally the outlying cause comes to the forefront and the Pervert is caught and punished.  A parent never forgets the assault on their innocent child…it hurts then and continues to hurt as you see your children suffer the repercussions.
It’s a wound that never really heals.  It’s like an alien abduction…with the poking and prodding, the manipulation…then it’s over and you ask yourself…did this priest really do that to me and why????

Often the child stays silent because they feel guilty.  Although they know it was a wrong thing, it was a curious bad thing, so the child feels guilt.  They think ” I must be bad too.”

First they win your trust, then they rip out your soul, defile it, and give it back to you to deal with. Do you pretend it never happened and hope it never happens again?  Most times that is exactly what happens.  Do you tell your folks?  Not often.  Children don’t want to hear, “you should have known better”…or “how could you let that happen?” …or ” why didn’t you say something?”  At first the child is in shock…wouldn’t you be?  The Embarrassment…and the shame. ( All due to a throwback from the
Ice Age whose base animal instincts rule over honor and humanity.)

I read that there are many heterosexual pedophiles.  I also know that just because a male or a female are homosexual, that doesn’t mean they are sexually attracted to children.  That takes a special
kind of  creature, a degenerate who needs to emasculate the victim, so they choose innocent, easily corruptible children.  Corruptible because children crave love and affection, kind words and encouragement…all the things the pedophiles offer…with that one fatal flaw.   You can’t tell the difference by just looking one in the eye.  They are very deceptive.  Sooner or later someone notices
something unusual or ends up on the receiving end of unwelcome familiarities on one’s own person.

What they do with that is entirely up to the individual.  Usually the victim stays quiet from shock and embarrassment.  Avoiding further contact by avoidance or distance.

Pedophiles are on a road all their own.  They chose it….when it came to that fork in the road.  They took it.  They have an insatiable desire.  Ever wary, ever vigilant for the perfect opportunity to slake the fire burning inside them.
The reward that drives them must be “powerful” to motivate someone to risk it all…to quench that fire, even one time.  But it’s never just one time, is it???

Tomorrow is December 1st and Pontillo still drags our good name through these twisted blogs of his. He says they are facts but they are not.  Simply because Pontillo writes things in his blog and calls them facts, doesn’t mean they (are facts).  They are not facts unless they are true.  That is the most important part of a fact.  “TRUTH, comprende’ Pontillo??”
I believe, Pontillo’s stories about Anthony J Cipolla are all contrived to garner sympathy for Cipolla and collect contributions to further their cause.
“The Bishop Had It In For Me” stuff is what Cipolla told his family and anyone who would listen…he used it in Rome.  He convinced Conte that he was the victim.  Yes…the Bishop was angry with Cipolla for causing and spreading so much malcontent.  Twice the Church had to go to his rescue for sex charges made against him by 3 children.  The first time:  I dropped the charges and it didn’t cost anyone a cent as far as I know, we never asked for money nor was there money or favor offered.
The Diocese Attorney was on retainer I’m sure.
“But”.. it took a (ton of money) to bury it, the second time.  Second time got everybody’s attention.   Cipolla made a splash when he victimized Tim Bendig because instead of Tim keeping Cipolla’s secret, Tim got an attorney and went public.  I remember reading articles in Time Magazine about Cipolla, after it all came to light.  It was in all the papers from The New York Times to The Pittsburgh Newspapers, out West, just about all over the United States…
There was always some mention, on and off somewhere, all during the negotiating and fact finding period, between Mr Bendig and his Attorney and The Bishop Wuerl and the Attorneys for the Church.

And so it continues…..When PA Pontillo died at 40, did Cipolla then become PA Pontillo, making him about 10 years younger, with a brand new name to tarnish?   That wouldn’t be very hard to pull off, would it?  Especially online.  Were they friends or relatives???  I’m just doing a little investigative journalism, like Pontillo and there are many things that just don’t add up.  Bare with me now.

Pontillo came out of the “nowhere” in earnest after Pope John Paul Laicized AJ Cipolla.  It sounds to me like the revenge of one scorned…don’t you agree?  Cipolla lost his credibility.  No one would listen anymore…to his whining stories or keep handing out donations to him.

So he assumed another name and another MO.  As I gather more facts, I’ll try to figure why this deranged man decided to accuse us & spread lies about us. Unless I’m absolutely right…and Cipolla is Pontillo, back to confound the public again.

I’m just hypothesizing.  Wuerlgate is so convoluted and labyrinth like…I’d almost expect David Bowie to “pop” up at any turn with goblins in tow.

Mr Pontillo I am tickled that you like my aphorisms so much you copy them in your blog.  I just now finished reading one of your newest chain lies and I have to say you don’t care how stupid you look when you start your comparisons and deductions, do you?  I really believe you must have been half in the bag,  when you wrote this blog.  You continued to contradict yourself by claiming things which directly contradicted the blogs you wrote the other day.  Don’t you proof read?    Listen Pontillo, I copy most of your stuff, which concerns me and my kids.  I read what you say and try to offer my sane opinion in my blog.  I’ve never lied about anything concerning Cipolla.  I also did not write the newspaper articles you claim to have read..regarding “newspaper testimony???”  What do you do?  Do you drink a couple six packs of Iron and jump on the computer looking for somebody to harass??

Does it make you feel like a Big Boy to trash a 70 year old woman, who had to deal with the aftermath of Cipolla’s assaults.  You have no empathy Pontillo?  You champion a lecherous “Aqualung” type and stomp on the victims…and Cipolla wasn’t looking for “Frilly Panties”  Pontillo…Cipolla was looking for Tighty Whities.  I know..my sons wore them.

First:  Pontillo/Cipolla,  Both of my sons showed up for what was supposed to be Cipolla’s arraignment, with me in 1978.  You weren’t there Pontillo but Cipolla was, and the Diocesan

Attorney,  the two detectives, the DA, a court recorder and us..and Cipolla was made to sit in the hallway with the detectives…not us.  We were in the DA’s Office with the Diocesan Attorney and the District Attorney.  And yes the Police were aware that charges were to be added..concerning my older son when he was 13…and had accompanied Cipolla to Michigan in 1977, with a couple other boys.

Ask them where my son had to bunk.  I’m sure Cipolla remembers their names.  Do your due diligence detective work and ask the boys who took the trip with them.  Ask them where Cipolla made my son sleep.  I’m positive they’ll remember that incident.  Start really fact checking or do you already know the answer? “PONCI”    ( ps: that’s a new name for you two…less letters.)

A new month and I’ll be so happy when this crazy man stops his character assassination of us.  You don’t have to remind me that I got angry and fired back at him, but at least I didn’t lie about anything.
It hurts me so much when he insinuates that my sons lied about Cipolla.  We thought he was a decent man, but we didn’t know what he was  really like.  We only knew the facade he put out there…as a “Catholic Priest.”

A man of impeccable behavior who walks with God and spreads His Holy Word.  That’s the kind of Priests we had at Saint Phillips in Crafton Pa.  I don’t know how to describe the kind of  Priest Cipolla was, he always acted like he was a little prideful.  I just know he was sneaky and had a problem keeping his hands off little boys.  Now, add the other things he did and said to terrorize and control my sons.  There was serious intent.

What a low life thing for anyone to do, let alone a “Catholic Priest.”  He sure gut punched me, I was in shock.  My 8 yr old son came home from his Catechism Class at the rectory with Father Cipolla, crying and saying he wasn’t going back to the rectory again.  When I asked him why he was crying and why he wasn’t going back to Catechism Class, he cried even harder.  Don’t you want Your First Holy Communion?  I asked.
Finally, he opened up enough to tell me “I can’t tell you mom, I swore an Oath to God that I wouldn’t.”    I was floored!!!…what????  My 8 year old son was terrified.  Father Cipolla had him convinced that “if he told anyone, after swearing that oath on the Bible, his mother or father would be taken by God as punishment.”      What?????????    He was only 8 years old and handicapped and Cipolla filled his head with nightmares and fears..which continued to haunt him.  I made him tell me.
“Who made you swear an oath??”  “Father Cipolla” my son cried.  I remember getting a sick feeling in my stomach.
(My son was bussed to classes for exceptional children. He didn’t attend St Francis Xavier with his siblings, ergo the Catechism Classes and studying for First Communion.)

Father Cipolla knew our family and he played us.  He was a Priest…we simply trusted him.  He used our trust, to our disadvantage.

Pontillo and Cipolla “PONCI” continue their journey to the dark side, spreading rude untruths, which they present as the truth.  But, they’re not even close…it’s all just more and more deliberate lies.
As they continue, I continue defending myself and my family.  I’m glad we’re going to Pittsburgh for The Christmas Holidays.  I’ll get to see my sister in Marianna and her family in Elliot.  My cousin Fred is performing at several places in Downtown Pittsburgh and we will be up for a whole week.

Pontillo + Cipolla = PONCI…someone told me Pontillo is using Cipolla for topic only.  Personally…I don’t think Cipolla is that stupid and I can tell Pontillo isn’t that smart.  He only thinks he is.  Tell him to show proof of what he speaks.  He can’t.  Pontillo posts awards Cipolla supposedly earned. That was back in 1972.  Cipolla just hadn’t been caught yet.
Pontillo says he has proof that he’s a swell guy too, because he got a couple atta’ boys from an employer…because he got a gun permit…and because he paid his rent on time… and because some girls posed for photos with him.  WOW!!  I’m convinced.  I guess he can fool some people, but not the smart ones.  I guess if I’m going to play table tennis with PONCI online, I better get better at the Art of Blogging…because it’s

Pontillo/Cipolla  What you don’t seem to grasp is , it makes no real difference what the Police Papers were called or even if Cipolla was arrested or not….(which he was, and taken down to the #9 Police Station) by Father Newell, who had one hour to deliver him there, or the police would return to the rectory and take him in themselves, in a patrol car in handcuffs.

The Bishop arranged for Cipolla’s OR Bond, with the Bishop’s assurance that he would be responsible for Cipolla’s whereabouts until the hearing on August 28th, 1978.  The Bishop was responsible for having Cipolla there on the 28th.  It was all taken care of on the telephone.  Fr Newell then returned to #9 Station and drove Cipolla back to the rectory. 

I was shocked at how influential the Church was regarding the police department.  Almost intimidating, but not threatening…something…like an understanding between them.  Very respectful and compliant to the Churches wishes. They handled the Clergy with kid gloves.  (I know the detectives didn’t like it at all and they said so from the beginning.)  These cases weren’t normal procedure. 

To continue…The most important point to this entire post is not the papers, not the arrest but the pure fact that Cipolla is guilty of sexually molesting  my sons and other women’s sons. This is the focal for my entire blog, and Patrick Pontillo is trying to help Cipolla molest more children, by asking you to pity and trust him.  I just can’t let that happen again, without trying to warn somebody.      (PLEASE BEWARE)

Time to flatly deny the tripe you are pushing now about us, no one has ever cross-examined me or contacted me about Cipolla except Douglas Yauger and Bishop Donald Wuerl, years ago when Bendig sued Cipolla.  Mr Yauger called Ann Rodgers Melnick from my phone and I talked to her for 5 minutes or so.   That’s it!!!    No one has mentioned 1978 until you did, a few years back.  2009 does ring a bell, my youngest son was killed by the driver of a truck, in a hurry to pick up her child. It was getting dark and with a revoked license, she passed on the right at 55 mph in a 35 mph zone.   2012 rings a bell too.  But the “bell” of 2015!!!…you launched a full blown assault on us.  I didn’t realize Atlantic American was also you, until 2015.  Do you SKYPE?  I suggest that we skype and actually converse instead of this petty stuff. Just a suggestion.

This is the beginning of what happened in 1978.

My Husband was a Disabled  Veteran who was under heavy medication and was told never to drink…which he did daily. (He was confined at the Veterans Hospital a few times because he suffered from psychosis, from a serious head wound.) Cipolla took advantage of that.

It was pouring down rain one night and my kids were soaked and cold…we were running in the dark to escape my husband’s rampage.  He had just grabbed our 7 year old  son and ground a lit cigarette out on his bare arm…we were shocked and terrified…it happened so fast.
He would just flip out…I’d never seen anything like it before in my life.  He’d get this look and you’d know he was close to”bugging out” on something or someone.   He’d get scared/paranoid, then agitated, defensive, and threatening. He was scary,because  he could lose it and become so cold and brutal.    So I grabbed my kids up and we ran out into the cold wet October night and ran to the St Francis rectory. When we got to the rectory, Father Newell let us in and we explained what had just happened to us etc.

I asked if Father Cipolla could contact The St Vincent De Paul and see if there was a place we could find shelter if we needed it.  A place for battered women and children. I borrowed their phone and called my sister-in-law and she drove to St Francis Church rectory to pick us up and take us to her house.  She said my husband wouldn’t dare act out at his brother’s house….his brother was twice my husband’s size and wouldn’t put up with his addled, drunken tirades. Oh….I remember everything very clearly.

I printed my e-mails to Patrick A Pontillo so I would have the proof I need to refute any fairy tales he may spin.  I gave Pontillo permission to reprint my posts so anyone could see exactly what I wrote to him.  His interpretation of what I actually said was inaccurate and insulting.  I admit I did insult him back…but “I” wasn’t lying.

Pontillo’s brand of journalism is to bastardize anything he can,  to try to sensationalize his malicious rail.

I still believe that Pontillo and Cipolla are one and the same person.  I wonder if it’s true, do they know each other??  All I really know is they don’t have their story straight. They only skim the truth for a background story, and then they fictionalize and rewrite the past (rest) to suit them…  They will then pass it all off as truth.  I’ll bet it’s to solicit donations for that Padre Pio Spiritual Refuge thing Cipolla was running that the Church warned people about.  That is so devious.

Cipolla is smart and he knows how to play people.  As long as there is breath in my body, I won’t forget Cipolla.  If he had only obeyed the Church’s rules after we dropped our complaint he could have resumed his life as a priest in good standing eventually.  In 1978 the Church covered for him but what does he do?   Three years later he’s at it again with Mr Bendig another young boy.  My family wasn’t aware because we moved away.  It wasn’t till my sister sent me the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that my family became aware of the Cipolla/Bendig debacle that was going on in Pittsburgh…  I couldn’t believe it.  Cipolla molested another young victim beginning in 1982 until 1987..he wasn’t cured at all….he denied everything and he didn’t go on and become a righteous man and priest as you would expect him to do if he seriously had the Calling.  I feared in 1978, he was a sneak and a
player.  I listened to Bishop Leonard and the Diocese Attorney and let the Church deal with him.

But no, instead he morphed into a cowardly lyin’ player.  Why did I back down from The Pittsburgh Diocese Attorney and the District Attorney of Pittsburgh??? I was uneducated in law and frightened.

I should have pressed those charges all the way to the Vatican Court if I had to.  I wonder how many victims he’s had since 1978…and earlier.   All these years later….Cipolla and Pontillo continue to spread lies about the victims.  I recently read that Pedophiles are(ALWAYS) repeat offenders.  They just can’t keep their hands off young children.

I am 70 years old.  I don’t want to die without having tried my best to ‘Stop’  Mr PA Pontillo and AJ Cipolla from making it ok for Cipolla to molest another child.  Only lies can do that.  If enough people believe Mr Pontillo’s calculating epistles, it could happen.  If Mr Cipolla is believed to be innocent, people will trust him again and he will be free to prey on thousands instead of only hundreds.  I understand he still wears the roman collar etc his normal MO…but he can’t be freely accepted as a priest in good standing because the Pope laicized him for refusing to obey his bishop and doing pretty much what he wanted to do, except obey his superiors.  He’s a rebel without a clue.

He was thumbing his nose at the rules of the Catholic Church…publicly…even on television. He made outrageous claims and continues to egg-on people like Patrick A Pontillo of Pittsburgh Pa. to harass and debase people he doesn’t even know personally…. just the lies and excuses of an old pervert.

The Popes, Mr Bendig, my children, myself and we can’t forget Cardinal Donald Wuerl, endure the pair’s assaults on practically a daily basis.  We are called nasty names and lied about, to what end?

Please understand.  In 1978 many factors entered into my decision to drop our charges on Anthony J Cipolla.  Pleas from Bishop Leonard was just one factor.  The harassment on the telephone from Cipolla’s supporters, coupled with written warnings, broken window, cut tires and the assault on
my son, by the neighborhood grocer was the accumulative backlash for daring to call the police on Father Anthony J Cipolla.  The Diocese Attorney was very forceful in his delivery, he made sense, after I watched him talk at my sons.  They were petrified after about 3 minutes.  He told them that they would be forced to talk about what happened, in front of 100 men and women and that Cipolla’s Attorney wouldn’t be as nice to them as he was….(and he was a bear.)

This was two months, not one….after Cipolla was found out the first time.

The criminality revealed in Altoona-Johnstown was driven by deference

I hope the good people of southwestern Pennsylvania have enough patience left to tolerate further commentary on their recent shock and sorrow: the state grand jury report on sexual abuse by clergy in the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Diocese, which justifiably labeled decades of child abuse as “soul murder.”

I know the wounds. As an outsider and a New England Catholic who suffered through the meltdown of the Boston Archdiocese in 2002, perhaps I can bring a fresh perspective to this well-worn story. I certainly could do no worse than the current Altoona-Johnstown bishop, Mark Bartchak, who wrote to his parishioners that the grand jury evidence was “filled with the darkness of sin.”

What, no acknowledgement of criminality?

I’m afraid that Bishop Bartchak wears the cope of history on his shoulders: FBI data show, that going back almost three-quarters of a century to the 1940s, he is the heir to four bishops at least 46 abusive priests and hundreds of child victims.

The grand jury report’s 147 pages have many lessons to teach us, but its main message can be summarized in seven words: deference spawns collusion spawns cover-up spawns victims.

This reduction to essentials is not a slight to the gravity or complexity of the grand jury narrative. Rather, it is a thoughtful attempt to identify the major diagnostic markers which can help us better understand the cause-effect dynamics that drive this kind of long-running crime spree.

The first crucial dynamic running through the story is “deference.” To understand the why and how of abuse in Altoona-Johnstown, and in the hundreds of similar cases around the country, we must first understand that, particularly in an institutional context, the documented abuse is not all sexual. To be enabled, to flourish in secrecy with impunity, it requires a supportive cultural context. That support comes from a culture of deference, and the associated collusion it spawns both within and outside the institution. The result is a “… conspiracy of silence [which] has deep roots in the Altoona diocese,” as it was put in the grand jury report.

On the religion side of the supposed church-state divide, the grand jury cited “the hubris of apathetic administrators” in concluding that church authorities colluded to cover up the crimes and enable predatory priests. A clinical analysis of the deranged behavior of the clerical soul destroyers might conclude that their sickness was driven by a compulsion. But when investigators discovered, locked in the bishops’ closets, more than 115,000 documents relating to abusive priests, it was clear that no compulsion drove the behavior of church leaders. Rather, their careful prioritization of institutional reputation over children’s safety was rational, considered, self-conscious, deliberate and actively managed.

On the secular side of the crime scene, we encounter a more insidious kind of collusion, with disturbing evidence of deferential secular authorities and judicial agencies giving the Catholic Church a pass and — what victims never had — options.

From the community leadership, deference was not only expected, but exploited for the church’s benefit, with many officials often owing their positions to the bishop. The Post-Gazette characterized this kind of incestuous interaction in its excellent reporting on the grand jury report, describing the “reluctance” of law enforcement officials to pursue cases of priest misconduct, even when urged by parents.

The lens of deference helps put the Altoona story into perspective.

First, this sordid narrative is at once unique and familiar: different names, different players, but the same violence, the same outcomes, the same pattern of collusion and deference that runs through all the depressing histories of church criminality written in recent decades.

Next, it is painfully obvious that, for a very long time, there was no separation of church and state in the governance of Blair County. With the church extorting a heavy premium for loyalty and allegiance, the conformity between the religious and the secular seemed more akin to Sharia law in Iran than American democracy.

Further, whether demanded, expected or leveraged for advantage, deference is not the unique prerogative of the Catholic Church. Private, secular corporations may also use it as a means of deflecting close scrutiny of their operations. But wherever it occurs, deference denotes privilege, entitlement, special treatment. In Altoona, it perverted the course of justice.

Where can we turn for consolation or commiseration? If misery loves company, Altoona Catholics might well turn for comfort to Ireland, a land to which they are tied by a legacy of immigration and religious heritage. No other country has suffered more from the disease of deference, and no one has spoken more eloquently of its pernicious effects on Irish society and culture than its brave prime minister, Enda Kenny.

Confronted with the sickening results of yet another government inquiry (the third) into a long history of abuse and cover-up in a rural Irish diocese — not unlike Altoona — an exasperated Mr. Kenny made a historic speech from the floor of the Irish parliament on July 20, 2012, excoriating both the Irish Catholic church and the Vatican for flouting the nation’s child protection laws: “The rape and torture of children were downplayed or ‘managed’ to uphold, instead, the primacy of the institution, its power, standing and ‘reputation.’ ”

With striking Celtic oratory, Mr. Kenny addressed the problematic tradition of Irish subservience to a Catholic Church which deemed itself unaccountable, “…where the swish of a soutane smothered conscience and humanity, and the swing of a thurible ruled the Irish-Catholic world.” But the criminal practices of that church would no longer be tolerated in 21st-century Ireland: “The age of deference is over,” an outraged Mr. Kenny cried.

If only.

And if only the United States had a national voice like Mr. Kenny’s to champion the cause of justice for victims.

Minnesota Church Won’t Investigate Priest

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) — The Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis is not planning to investigate a priest from the state who was named in a Facebook posting by a man before he shot himself to death in a Kentucky church parking lot. But a Kentucky diocese plans to continue with its investigation of the man’s allegations.

Archdiocese spokesman Dennis McGrath told The Messenger-Inquirer newspaper there was no justification for an investigation into the Rev. William Baer, former rector of St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, where David M. Jarboe had once been a student.

The 23-year-old Jarboe shot himself in the parking lot of Blessed Mother Catholic Church in Owensboro, Ky. on Feb. 3.

His Facebook posting mentioned Baer and two other priests, one of whom he praises, as well as pain as a result of sexual abuse in the church. The Kentucky man didn’t accuse a specific priest or other individual of abuse in the note.

“I mean, because he was critical of Father Baer in his Facebook post does not make the giant leap that he was responsible for whatever happened to him,” McGrath told the newspaper. “… Father Baer is one of our finest, most popular priests.”

McGrath said Baer was well-respected and was instrumental in St. John Vianney College Seminary’s growth when he was there.

The “poor bedeviled young man, for him to mention (Father Baer) in the same context with whatever may have happened to him is so unfortunate and so unfair,” the archdiocese spokesman said of Jarboe.

Jarboe mentioned three priests in the note. To the first one, whom he identified as Father Fedewa, Jarboe wrote: “Thanks for proving to me what dedicating your life to Christ can be like. Thanks for your service to the Church.”

To Baer, “you get no thanks. You are an evil man. Period.”

To the third, the Rev. Freddie Byrd, “I forgive you.”

Baer, now at Transfiguration Catholic Church in Oakdale, Minn., did not immediately respond to an e-mail request for comment.

Byrd was pastor of Blessed Mother from 1998-2008. According to the diocese’s website, he is pastor of St. Peter of Antioch and Sacred Heart parishes in Waverly, Ky.

He declined to comment when reached by the newspaper at the St. Peter of Antioch church rectory Wednesday.

The Diocese of Owensboro announced Monday it is utilizing an independent investigator to examine the allegations made by Jarboe. The Daviess County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office has asked the Owensboro Police Department to investigate as well.

The Diocese of Owensboro has been in contact with the Rev. Peter A. Laird, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, McGrath said.

 

Morganfield Priest to be Suspended

The Catholic Diocese of Owensboro is set to suspend another priest this year.

Eyewitness News obtains a letter written by Bishop William Medley about an investigation into allegations made against Father Freddie Byrd, the Priest at St. Ann’s Parish in Morganfield.

The Bishop, saying in the letter, that an adult has come forward alleging Father Byrd had inappropriate contact with him back in 1983, when the man was just 17 years old.

According to the letter, Father Byrd was not a Priest at the time.

The Bishop continued in the letter saying:

“Even though this allegation dates back more than thirty years, It is the policy of the Catholic Church in the United States that even one substantiated allegation of abuse is cause for removal from the public ministry. We cannot consider this allegation substantiated, but the Diocesan Review Board believes this allegation to have sufficient merit to act immediately.”

Father Richard Powers will serve as Administrator Pro Tempore at St. Ann’s for the coming months.

The Owensboro Diocese recently suspended Fr. Gerarld Baker earlier this year amid allegations.
